eww offline mode...
If they continue the "free to play" Anet has my money. As a casual player I don't feel it is necessary to dish out money for a monthly fee, hence why I play GW instead of WoW or EQ.

The ability not to talk to any living characters would make it go into "shutdown mode." NPC talk is bad as it is, offline would drive me into insanity.

Yes, GW2 surely will kill GW1. GW1's graphics are already extremely painful on the eyes if you've played Oblivion or other modern games with vastly more up to date & better graphics than GW1 has. By the time GW2 comes out then GW1 will have really outdated graphics, with GW2 having modern graphics. Of course GW2 will kill GW1.

As it seems that everyone has theories about what will happen after GW2 comes out, what about we move to the next question:
Will there be a GW3 and, if so, will it kill GW2?
(in other words: stop speculating...)

What if Anet just finally just scraps GW in general after the release of GW2?
Kinda like how AC died. With the final server shutdown... There woulden't be much stoping them because it has no monthy fees.
Plus, If there ever was a great combination of skills, It's probably been nerfed.

I can not speculate anything... i mean both can get boring and some players will prefer one and stay there, cause since they said that in GW2 there will be 100 lvl cap (or maybe more) it will be extremely boring to become a no-lifer mob killing machine to lvl up... but in GW1 it gets boring once you do lots of stuff there... so some people will prefer to play in one of those games and others will prefer to play in the other.
(Btw i was talking about PVE)

even if it is a splitting image of wow people will play gw2...simply because...its the only MMO/CORPG that doesn't have monthly fees and actually is professional.

Guildwars has been dying in a slow dramatic manner ever since the release of factions.
Releasing an expansion(sequel) without balancing the existing classes and skills was just a cunning ruse to distract the paying customers. Now with the 4th release there are too many problems with skill balance/class balance to resolve. Each of Izzy's balance updates just piss off more players.
The focus on "High level PVP" makes the game less fun for the average player. I don't think casual players want to install 3rd party VOIP programs and take orders from Build-Nazis just to play in whatever HoH is called now.
Instant gratification is what video games have always been about, not achievment. No flashy dance emoticon or impressive sounding title would get me to play ZORK.
GW2 is NC Soft's last great hope for fixing a hopelessly broken game.
Anet will have to pull the plug on GW 1 eventually or make the server code available to the public. With no revenue stream from an old game how will they justify spending sever money for no gain? Do you think the shareholders would approve?
R.I.P. GW

You mean Asheron's Call 2, not Asheron's Call. The original Asheron's Call has never had it's servers shut down. It's still alive and jumping. LONG LIVE ASHERON'S CALL.

A lot of people here have ran through everything GW has to offer, and say things like "guild wars is dead to me", well, guess what: there are people who aren't 14 years old that play this game, and not everybody can play all day.
I, for one, have played GW for over a year, and am just getting into the factions campaign, because I can't play everyday. I'm just saying that those people who happen to have those opinions that there's nothing left to do in the game are not the majority. Hell, even the developers said one of the points they were stressing was the longevity of the game, where casual players can pick up the game and play if they haven't been on in a month or two. I, for one, hope they will still pay some attention to GW after 2 is released.

At least you could still play the thing.
Going to ignore the childish flame here and instead focus on the subject of active players. As has been stated, that's how many copies ANet has sold of the Guild Wars titles. Not the number of Prophecies sold, not the number of Factions sold, but *all* of them together.
That means that they are not taking into account multiple copies for one account, nor are they taking note of multiple copies owned by the same person. That means that the actual population of Guild Wars seems a lot smaller than it seems.

Scientists say that nothing really lasts forever, not even our sun. But I'm sure Guild Wars will be up and running from this day onwards forever. The titles are truly an investment for bright future, so keep on getting and bragging about them, folks. There's no need to panic or start thinking things through rationally.

Well, GW will be 'technically' alive as long as the servers keep running for players to play in. But the game is already stagnant (for a long time), if not dead, since there aren't much revolutionary changes made to the game.
The core of GW's gameplay gets stale pretty fast and character progression comes to a standstill once you hit the level cap (the latter is rather important for RPGs). Even if ANet does add new content to GW, I don't see it as a long term solution since the essential gameplay is what most tired players have gotten bored of; more professions added will also create more problems. So for GW to become refreshing again, it needs to evolve; and I'm guessing it is not possible with the current game engine (although ANet could try to make the game more rewarding but that will probably get boring fast again). PvE gameplay past completion of storyline may be boring for most since character progression isn't there and most of the endgame efforts are either converted into wealth or aesthetics; nothing really enhances the performance of your character. PvP has too little development and there are too few casual modes of play. Although some of you are probably anti-WoW players but if you see for yourself at how well PvE and PvP blends in the game now, you might be able to see how GW PvP and PvE could sit together. If PvP in GW could enable a player to benefit in PvE and vice versa, the game would perhaps be less stale. But anyway, I'd agree that there is too little development in the PvP aspects of GW especially for a game that prides itself in that area.
ANet has tried to make improvements all this while but I see GW still having room for much more. It's a shame if they decided drop future developments on the game but if they aren't able to make a profit, they can't very much keep the game alive as well.
GW:
+ interesting gameplay mechanics and concepts
+ casual-friendly
- not flashy enough
- PvE has too little variety
- PvE too tied to PvP rules (responsible for the above)
- not very rewarding
- character progression too short
Lastly, although I belong to the pessimistic bunch of GW players, I doubt GW will really 'die' as long as the servers are up and running. And I don't think GW2 will kill it. However, GW has been stagnant for too long, and that to me, is dead enough.
Just my feel.

GW2 will not kill GW1. other games will kill GW2 AND GW1...especially thinking about Diablo 3.
Today's Guild Wars lost alot of its old players and will probably lose some more when GW2 is released...but will also get the attention of new players who never even touched GW1.
